Westbourne Grove

Total remodelling of a townhouse on
Westbourne Grove, London.

Concept

The project reconfigures a Westbourne Grove townhouse through a controlled and restrained interior strategy. The raised ground floor has been opened to create a continuous open plan space with uninterrupted views extending from the Crittall pocket doors through to the garden.

Two staircases, one descending from the upper floors and the other rising above the basement playroom, are conceived as delicate steel and timber furniture elements rather than conventional stair structures.

At the rear of the plan, an L shaped rooflight draws natural light deep into the interior, reinforcing the calm and openness of the space.

Spatial Strategy

The plan is simplified to establish a continuous relationship between living, kitchen and dining spaces. Subtle shifts in form, alignment and joinery define individual zones while maintaining visual continuity throughout the interior.

Each space adopts its own character whilst remaining part of a cohesive architectural language.

Joinery Concepts

Joinery is treated as an architectural system rather than applied furniture. The language is crisp, warm and tactile, combining highly lacquered surfaces with matt finished oak to create a restrained and consistent palette.

Storage, thresholds and functional elements are integrated into a continuous composition of panels, reveals and aligned surfaces, reducing visual noise throughout the interior.

Light & Atmosphere

Natural light is used to reinforce the clarity of the space, softening material transitions and emphasising proportion. Artificial lighting is integrated within joinery and ceiling planes to maintain a calm and controlled atmosphere.

Feature lighting is treated as part of the architectural composition, whether concealed within joinery or expressed as sculptural elements.

Material Language

The material palette is deliberately restrained, combining timber, stone and painted surfaces with minimal contrast. Detailing is reduced to emphasise alignment, shadow gaps and precise junctions.

This approach allows material quality and craftsmanship to define the character of the interior.
