Our thoughts
A contemporary residential refurbishment and extension at Badgers Hill, located within the Wentworth Estate, Surrey.
Following a recommendation, we were appointed to rework a scheme prepared by a large local housebuilder. The original proposal called for total demolition and a new-build house.
We identified this as an unnecessary and wasteful approach, resulting in the loss of valuable embodied carbon and overlooking the potential of the existing structure. Instead, we developed a strategy focused on refurbishment, extension, and sustainable residential design, retaining and transforming the building.
The house has been reimagined to suit the client’s lifestyle, with a clear and user-focused layout. The entrance has been opened up, long views have been introduced through the plan, and a series of light-filled, open-plan living spaces have been created, balancing openness with defined function.
The scheme increases the overall floor area by 50%, including the addition of a new loft conversion, while maximising the allowable plot ratio. The design is fully compliant with the Wentworth Estate Roads Committee (WERC) planning requirements under the Wentworth Act.
As well as extending the property, the project involves a deep retrofit of the existing building fabric. High-performance insulation, upgraded glazing, and new building services ensure the house meets modern energy efficiency standards, significantly reducing long-term energy use.
This residential architecture project in Surrey demonstrates how thoughtful design can deliver a high-quality contemporary home without the need for demolition.
Currently on site, with completion due in 2026.
