Located in Englefield Green, this replacement residence has become a catalyst for change, lifting a tired residential street and enabling other plots to be redeveloped to a higher standard.
The Client’s brief was to maximise the potential of the site so that the whole family could live comfortably together, now that the historic model of children leaving home early no longer applied.
Our response was to create a highly sustainable, low energy architecture of two very individually defined languages.

The front elevation is a stripped-back Victorian façade of traditional sliding sash windows, framed around a finely detailed stone portico.

The rear however is positively modern, but in a palette that ties the building together. The ground floor glazing is framed with white render but buttressed with two large black reeded timber panels. The upper floors are simply fenestrated and include frameless glass balustrades, opening the upper floors with views over Englefield Green.

The centrepiece of the house is a traditional three-story open staircase that winds up through the house, where a frameless glass roof light floods the upper levels with light.
